Really useful these boxes for storing all the experiments. They stack well and the different sizes mean that they are more efficient in the storage/space ratio. Makes easy to find as we work on an experiment on demand system. As the students arrive they say I learnt about this today but I didn't understand it, we didn't do an experiment, so we can rapidly get out the experiment and let the student carry out the experiment and lean by doing and by discovery.

Mobile phones in lessons
Many teachers don't like phones in their classrooms. Some are afraid their lesson could be recorded. I like my students to use their mobile phones in the lab. They record all my experiments. The good and the bad. My students Record the experiments, they take photos of the set ups. They enjoy taking Slo-mo of fast and not so fast events and using the phone as a microscope. Amazingly they usually organise themselves that one student does the recording and passes the files around. They act very responsibly and I have never had any problems. On the contrary the opposite is true. #STEM #Science #iteachphysics

Water Clock
I need a much better water clock to do this experiment Rule of odds - Todays job. A cart is rolled down the track. As it passes a bell it rings the bell. We try and make the time between each bell ring the same. As the cart is accelerating, the gap between each bell gets larger. in the ratio 1:3:5:7 etc Once this is set up then I use water coming out from a tap to fill up different measuring cylinders. The amount of water is in the ratio 1:4:9:16:25

Red Cabbage Indicator
Its that time of year to cut up the red cabbage and make red cabbage indicator. Fun but smelly.
Blend a leaf of red cabbage with 100 ml distilled water. Filter (cheese cloth recommended). The resulting solution displays pretty much a full range of colours from pH 1 to14. Some people recommend boiling the cabbage but it is not necessary

Determining the Molecular weight of a volatile substance
Determining the Molecular weight of a volatile substance using the steam generator. Problem here is making the students wait until it is hot enough. A known amount of a volatile liquid is injected into the gas syringe at 100C. The volatile liquid evaporates and turns to gas and the volume is measured. #iteachchemistry #Science #STEM

#Physics Much of the usual fun with conductors and insulators. Both are at the same temp but the metal feels colder. Interesting answers of why. #iteachphysics #Science #STEM

Racing for the Future: Going Green #26
In this episode Philip and Paul look at SailGP and its Sustainability Impact League. As well as being Powered by Nature, the organisers have gone one stage further by introducing a Green aspect to the competition. There is an additional prize for the most green team.
A second leader board, which runs
alongside the Season Championship, has been created to monitor the performance
of the teams in the Impact League, with each team's score at each SailGP event
being added to the overall Impact League leader board. At the end of the season
it is proposed that there will be two podiums, with the winner of the Impact
League crowned alongside the Season Champion and earning funding for its
purpose partner, who supports and advises them throughout the season and is
visible on the team’s livery. SailGP's Impact League has been set some
sustainability criteria - social and environmental - to operate against with
each team awarded points based on its fulfilment of these criteria. The
criteria range from pioneering new technologies focusing on clean energy
solutions and removing all single-use plastics, to diversity and inclusion and
using the team's voice for good. Each team will be externally audited and an
overall leader board created after each event. Philip and Paul look at this and
look at whether this could be inserted into other sports to improve their
sustainability and perhaps including all the spectators to earn extra points
for their team. We have seen Formula One with formula-E coming along - but this
would be so much better if all the factories also became eco-friendly. #podcast #climatechange #climatecrisis #climateemergency

Looking at Electrolysis. Setting this up is always fun and the students are amazed that when turning the small test tube upside down the water doesn't come out and they have to explain that as well. The best science is not just the stuff they have to do. #iteachphysics #Science

Making a Battery
Whilst teaching electrolysis I found out the students knew nothing about what a battery was so we needed to make one. Using Copper and Zinc electrodes connected to a simple LCD clock to shown that it worked. The students found out it was nothing to do with the potato but the choice of metals and some metals made better batteries ( higher voltages) than others. #iteachphysics #Science #STEM
