Sonometer

#ALevel #Physics My new Sonometer from @SciChemEdu arrived. Typical science equipment no manual at all. Now need to devise the best experiments to use the machine rather than being given best examples. #iteachphysics #Science #STEM

Cannon Problem

#ALevel #Physics The physics of shooting the invading navy from the top of the cliff. Simplifying the numbers - no calculators concentrating on the problem. Trying to get more maths into the Physics. #iteachphysics #STEM #Science

Chemistry is fun

 Student: I hate Chemistry!!

Chemistry is

more fun with whizzes, pops and bangs. Student I love Chemistry!!!

Intro to Digital Microscopy

#GCSE #Biology A great introduction to microscopes using a digital microscope connected to the PC looking at clothes, money, books. Students so excited with what they see. So many ways better than compound microscope #STEM #Science

Balancing Equations

#ALevel #Chemistry Balancing Equations. The students were having a problem with the first one. Now I know its a bit more of a challenge but not too difficult!!!!

I use Can't Be Asked
Can you do it? #Science #STEM #iteachchemistry

Podcast Reducing Emissions

Scientists are calling for emissions in Carbon Dioxide to be cut by 7.6% per year. This means that by 2030 the Carbon Dioxide emissions will be cut by half. The scientists are also calling for a 3% a year cut in extracting coal, oil and gas - effectively leaving the reserves in the ground. But at present rather than a drop in production, the production has actually increased worldwide. During the pandemic most people thought that there would be a cut in emissions with few cars and planes travelling, but with people at home more emissions were produced.
Philip and Paul also look at "Orca", the name of Climeworks' new direct air capture and storage plant in Iceland. It will take carbon dioxide removal to the next level by combining direct air capture technology with the underground storage of carbon dioxide. Orca will capture 4000 tons of Carbon Dioxide per year - making it the world's biggest climate-positive facility to date.

Safer heating Limestone

How do you make your wire baskets to hold Limestone when heating it into Calcium Oxide - wind nichrome wire around and around. Sometimes I try to wrap as a parcel. - with mine the wire always expand lots and sometimes the limestone falls out? The Horizontal Bunsen stops limestone falling in if bits fall off. Then the Bunsen doesn't get damaged.. #STEM #Science #GCSE #Chemistry

DVD in a Mirror lies

In my last post I looked at a DVD reflecting the light. But what happens if you put a mirror next to the DVD. The colours are changed. No surely a mirror reflects what you see so whay are their different colours in the mirror. I know you think this is a fake so try it yourself and see that this really happens.

Decarbonising the world

Decarbonising the world isn't about getting rid of the carbon - that’s impossible, but it all about managing the resource. Carbon Taxes can be applied to industries to push them in the right direction allowing the more efficient companies to trades carbon credits with other companies by setting caps and allowing trade. Carbon Coins are used to reward companies for not emitting carbon. The systems all come down to money. Either raising money in the form of taxes for those companies who must make carbon  dioxide as part of their business like the cement industry and paying  other companies who might be investing in wind and solar power. Generating this revenue means that the money can be spent on research and infrastructure and justice. Changing what we do needs to be done, and it needs to be done quickly.
