Chemistry in the Holidays. Playing with a dynamic Equilibria Cobalt Chloride in conc HCl. Adjusting the temperature, ice water or boiling water pushes the equilibrium one way or the other to make it either pink or blue.

Solar Furnace
Physics in the Holidays. Opportunities to lay with the solar furnace as we are forecast a sunny day.

Mutations
Biology in the Holidays. The same plants growing near to one another. The pink one is the mutation as the normal varieties are white. One base change in a gene affects the colour of the plant. We investigate how this can happen.

Pasco Code Node
The @pascoscientific Code Node is great when you need a special type of sensor and the students can program this using blocky code to do exactly what they need it to do. With its array of sensors the students can use them individually or combined to measure a particular effect.

Maths in the Holidays
Maths in the Holidays. Playing catch up during the long break to consolidate students' Maths skills so they can keep up next term before GCSEs and A Levels. Missing something during term time - it is only sometimes possible to go back over a failed concept.

Free Body Diagrams
Physics in the Holidays - looking at free body diagrams with vectors to simplify complex systems into something that can easily be measured and using the force board with rulers, protractors, and some trig to compare theory with practice.

Identification
Identification. What is an insect? What features does it have? Can you tell an insect from an arthropod - some were easy like these, and others were far more difficult.

Chemical Reactions
So much Chemistry is not really Chemistry, but understanding the Physical properties of chemicals - watching chemicals change as they react and form new compounds is real chemistry, and observing what happens is a very important part of understanding chemical processes.

Pasco doppler Rocket
It's a good, fun way to learn and observe the Doppler effect using the @pascoscientific Doppler Rocket. As the rocket, with its loudspeaker, moves towards and away from the student, the sound changes.

De Moivre and Euler
I'm looking at Further Maths to find out some of the interesting features and principles that link all Maths and Science together. Teaching is all about understanding the building blocks of all things.

On and Off Magnet
How do you switch a permanent magnet on and off? This magnet does it, giving the students quite a problem attempting to work out how it worked. Designing experiments and using magnets and electro-magnets to try and replicate its action.

Recording the heartbeat
I am using the electronic stethoscope to record the heartbeat and then play it back amplified so that all the students can hear what the sounds are like. The students prefer this system as they can take their heartbeats away on their phones.

Balancing Equations
I used Snatoms to show how to balance equations. The students found this amusing, and it helped them understand what was going on, turning an abstract concept into a physical one.

weather sensor
I'm using the @pascoscientific weather sensor to gather weather data from ordinary days so the students can better understand averages, maxima and minima from a large dataset. Too often, students have to find an average of three or four items and we can use tools like Capstone to help.

complex numbers exponential form
Complex numbers in exponential form—Teaching complex numbers isn't complicated, but it can be hard to get your mind to think about them. Seeing numbers in graphic form helps considerably here.

Frictionless Hover balls
I'm using frictionless hover balls to help explain collisions. They are great when introducing collisions at angles and, when coupled with some sensors to show their angle and speed, invaluable for demonstrating the conservation of momentum.

microscope stage calibration slide
Using a microscope stage calibration slide to work out the measurements in the eyepiece graticule. Students seem to find it a hard concept to look at a ruler with an eyepiece graticule, then remove the slide, replace it with the subject, and be able to measure it.

Set up for molten electrolysis
Setting up ready to do electrolysis of a molten substance. Most of these are too dangerous to do in the lab and require a fume cupboard to do safely.

New Camera Boat
An all-electric Ocean Green Whaly 455 is undergoing trials on the River Thames, ready to be equipped as a Camera Boat. The boat is virtually silent, apart from the noise of the prop pushing the water.
Bluetooth
Disaster struck. Some of my machines suddenly wouldn't connect the Bluetooth devices to @pascoscientific Capstone. The Sensors were fine, but the Bluetooth suddenly died on two machines. Windows pretended it was working. The new Bluetooth dongles are in, and they are working as before.

Conditional Probability
Conditional Probability is one of the Math concepts that the students really find difficult, but translating the word of the question into the formula makes everything so much easier.

Lego Pneumatics
Examining the power of pneumatics with Lego, pumping up a pressure tank and then using these to open or close a cylinder, the students were amazed at how science backs up engineering principles.

Flowers
Flowers exhibit a stunning variety of shapes and styles, each uniquely designed to attract insects for reproduction. Their relentless evolution highlights the beauty of nature's ingenuity, even as pollinators become scarcer. #Nature #Evolution #Biodiversity
