Ticker Tape Timing

With all the wonders of electronic sensors sometimes using some basic equipment like ticker tape timers to look at acceleration and how the lengths of tape get longer in the same time period aids the understanding.

Infrared led

An invisible infrared led shines brightly when we take a photo of it for the Planks constant apparatus

Biology Virus

Its certainly easier teaching about viruses these days. The students know about them and how to stop them. They still struggle with how they get into cells and what they do there however

The Nylon Rope trick

The nylon rope trick is one of my favourite experiments and also using @Snatoms to show the students what is going on at that oil water interface

Pasco and Lego

Two of my favourites, Lego and @Pascoscientific and working together. Creating different types of carts for use with a motion sensor. Trying different wheels and wheel arrangements for different surfaces. Which is the most effective for different terrains

Probability

Maths is having fun with the dice tower and 120 dice trying to see if more dice gives the 1/6 ratios, or whether 1200 dice was better. Conclusion we needed to go much bigger - very much bigger

Locktronics is an electricity winner

So easy from diagram on the board to a completed and working circuit using Locktronics from @MatrixTSL The students can seem to get through twice as many experiments in the time and more importantly with greater understanding

Ready to do a titration

I have started using automatic dispensing pipettes with the students when setting up titrations. Why use the pipettes with a bulb when the students aren't good with them and use these which are more accurate and faster.

yeast bubbling

Anaerobic respiration demonstrated by yeast making carbon dioxide in some orange juice and in bread

Friday 21 October 2022

Proving the theorems

Sometimes knowing the theorem is not enough. You have to be able to prove it and justify the facts to be true.

Thursday 20 October 2022

Rotaflow or not

Carrying out a titration, I gave the students the choice of different types of burettes. I showed them how they worked and then they all chose the straight ones rather than the Rotaflow design.

Failed experiment

Investigating catalysts. The student was so slow in lighting the spill the experiment was over before he was ready - we had to do it again after this.

Sunday 9 October 2022

Investigaing a CRT.

I grew up with CRT's, but for most of the students they have not seen one, so I took off the case from the Oscilloscope to show all the parts and how it works.

Saturday 8 October 2022

Ionic Shapes

We used a Brother Scan'n'Cut machine to cut out 1+, 2+ and 3+  ions along with the 2- and 1- counterparts. The students seem to find it easier to create and write down chemical formulae.

Breathing Model

I had some problems breathing then I realised there was a hole in my diaphragm, so after a few minutes the rubber was replaced and I could breath again. Fortunately this was the model not me.

Smartcart with adjustable fan

The @pascoscientific smart cart with the fan is great for some experiments, but using the template on the site, you can 3D print a base for the fan which allows the fan to be turned in all sort of angles which is even more useful especially for resolution of vectors.

Wednesday 5 October 2022

Momentum

The @pascoscientific Smart carts excel at momentum equations. Even with quickly done student data the students can determine the relationships between mass and velocity in collisions

Getting into Coding

I find writing questions is hard. It is easier to start with the answer and find numbers that work rather than designing a question. Here coding comes in generating  lots of different quadratic equations at different levels. Work in progress.

Numbers of batteries and strength of magmetic field

GCSE Physics looking at increasing the number of batteries and the relative strength of the magnetic field as measured by the number of croc clips that could be picked up

Sunday 2 October 2022

Experimental Probability

Having a go at experimental probability using a 3-D printed dice tower and 10 dice of different types - 4, 6 10, 12 and 20 sided.

Chemistry visualising problems

Stereochemistry is very difficult to visualise, even sometimes when playing with models.  Even looking at this, some students couldn't...
